The social media world is seeing some exciting new updates which have come from photo and video app, Snapchat, in the form of a major rebrand and the revelation of its unpredicted venture into hardware.
Snapchat co-founder Evan Spiegel has recently unveiled Spectacles, a $130 (approximately £100) pair of sunglasses with a camera built into it, in the wake of the company's rebrand which saw it renamed to Snap Inc. When people visit the company's website, they will now be greeted by a landing page with the following statement:
"Snap Inc. is a camera company. We believe that reinventing the camera represents our greatest opportunity to improve the way people live and communicate. Our products empower people to express themselves, live in the moment, learn about the world, and have fun together".
This move away from Snap's image as a social media company created the perfect stage for the brand to reveal its venture into hardware with Spectacles. Reported product specifications include the ability to record videos up to 10 seconds long and also connect to the mobile app, allowing users to wirelessly add snaps to their 'Memories' within the app. Check out the official trailer from Snap below:
Speaking on the company's decision to rebrand, Spiegel comments:
"When we were just getting started it made sense to name our company Snapchat Inc., because it was our only product! Now that we are developing other products, like Spectacles, we need a name that goes beyond just one product - but doesn't lose the familiarity and fun of our team and brand. We decided to drop the "chat" and go with Snap Inc!"
Furthermore, industry reports have stated that the company is predicted to reach almost $1bn (approximately £773m) in global advertising sales by 2017.
With its new in-app advertising offering, company rebrand and hardware venture, Snap is making a grand counter-attack against rival Facebook which took a few pages out of its book earlier this year with the advent of 'Instagram Stories'.
It's safe to say that Snap has climbed higher on the list of innovative businesses to watch, you can read our report on the rise of the company here. We look forward to seeing more exciting changes from them in the future.
Snap Inc. has officially released Spectacles for sale online in the US. This trendy product was previously only available at Snapbot vending machines and the pop-up store in New York City, but now consumers can buy themselves a pair simply by heading over to Spectacles.com.
Though the pop-up store has now been closed, the company has stated that "Snapbots will continue to land in surprising locations around the US". What is more, consumers have been advised to expect a two to four weeks wait for their purchase to ship, and households are limited to six pairs.
This is truly exciting news and we are staying on alert for news of when Spectacles will also be available in the UK and other parts of the world.
