After working with Heather Knight and Dance Consortium on the 2013 Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (Trocks) tour programme we were asked to work on the 2015 tour. Our task this time round was considerably more difficult than the in 2013 as we were competing with our own success.
The 2013 programme design had been picked up by the rest of the world and been used across the whole global tour. So not only did we have to create a programme that reflected the unquestionable skill of the dancers, amazing costumes, choreography and humour, but also needed to be as successful as the previous material.
We chose to adapt many of the elements and rules about breaking rules we adopted for the 2013 artwork, using parts of images, using obscure juxtaposition, balancing rich and bright colours with the clear white space, emphasising the humour by isolating dances and using them to balance content heavy areas with colour or humour.
Breaking the rules here seemed to be the right thing to do, after all, the Trocks do! We changed the background colours to what we wanted, overlapped images into and onto other pages and images to create the appearance of fluidity, melded piece into piece and page into page.
Rules are there to be broken and when you do, wonderful things can be created… The Trocks do this with wonderful results, and it appears with the comments about our programme design, the media thinks we do too…
Review of the trocks, notably...
"Excellent programme, by the way, with group photos of ballerinas, danseurs and the lads uncostumed a clever way of setting up biographies fake and real."
